Health and Safety Policy for Man and a Van Uxbridge
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and working practices followed by Man and a Van Uxbridge when providing removal and transport services. Our aim is to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our activities.
Policy Statement
Man and a Van Uxbridge is committed to conducting all removal, loading, transport and unloading work in a manner that prevents injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm. We will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice for moving, handling and transportation.
We recognise that removal work, including domestic and commercial moves, involves manual handling, vehicle use, working in unfamiliar properties, and handling customers' belongings. These activities require careful planning, supervision and control to ensure that risks are properly managed.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Man and a Van Uxbridge rests with the company management. Management is responsible for:
Ensuring that this policy is implemented, maintained and reviewed on a regular basis.
Providing appropriate resources, equipment and information to support safe working practices.
Conducting or arranging risk assessments for key activities and ensuring that suitable control measures are followed.
Ensuring that vehicles and work equipment are maintained in a safe condition.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including:
Briefing staff on job-specific risks before starting work.
Checking that appropriate equipment is available and in good condition.
Monitoring working practices at loading and unloading locations and during transit.
Reporting hazards, incidents and near misses and taking immediate action where necessary.
All employees and contractors working with Man and a Van Uxbridge have a duty to:
Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Follow all instructions, training and safe systems of work provided.
Use the equipment and protective gear supplied for their tasks.
Report any accidents, incidents, unsafe conditions or defects without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Risk assessments are carried out for regular activities such as manual handling of furniture and boxes, use of vehicles, loading and unloading on the roadside, working on stairs and in confined spaces, and operating in different property types. Where necessary, job-specific assessments are carried out to consider particular challenges such as heavy or awkward items, limited access, or high-rise properties.
From these assessments, we develop safe systems of work covering lifting techniques, team lifting, use of trolleys and other aids, safe stacking of goods, securing loads within vehicles, and safe parking and positioning of vehicles during moves.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is carefully controlled. Staff are trained in safe lifting and carrying methods to minimise the risk of back injuries, strains and other musculoskeletal problems. Heavy or awkward items are handled by more than one person or with appropriate lifting aids.
We use suitable equipment such as sack trucks, removal trolleys, moving blankets and straps to help protect both staff and customers' belongings. Equipment is inspected regularly, and any damaged or defective items are taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Vehicles are essential to our removal services and are maintained in a roadworthy condition. Regular checks are carried out on tyres, lights, brakes, restraints and other safety-related components. Loads are positioned and secured to prevent movement during transit, reducing the risk of injury and damage.
Drivers are expected to follow all road traffic rules, operate vehicles safely and considerately, and allow sufficient time for journeys to avoid the need for unsafe driving practices. Parking and loading are planned to reduce risk to staff, customers and other road users.
Work at Customer Premises
Many of our activities take place at customer homes and business premises. Staff are trained to assess access routes, stairways, corridors and external areas on arrival, identifying hazards such as trip risks, poor lighting or restricted access. Where hazards are identified, staff will take reasonable steps to reduce the risk, which may include adjusting routes, using additional equipment or seeking assistance.
We take care to protect property by using covers and protective materials where reasonable and by handling goods in a controlled and organised manner. Staff remain alert to potential hazards to occupants and visitors while work is in progress.
Training, Information and Supervision
Man and a Van Uxbridge provides appropriate health and safety training to employees according to their role. This may include induction training, manual handling techniques, safe use of vehicles and equipment, and how to respond to incidents and emergencies.
Information on hazards, control measures and emergency arrangements is communicated clearly to staff, and further guidance is provided when new equipment, procedures or services are introduced. Supervision is provided to ensure that training is applied in practice and that safe standards are maintained.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, injuries, damage and near misses that occur during removal activities are to be reported promptly. These reports are reviewed to identify causes and to implement remedial actions to prevent recurrence.
Where appropriate, incidents will lead to updates in risk assessments, revised procedures, additional training or changes in equipment or work methods.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We recognise that effective health and safety management benefits from the involvement of those who carry out the work. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working practices. Management will consider all reasonable suggestions and communicate any changes made as a result.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, the nature of the services we provide, or relevant legislation or guidance. Our objective is to maintain and continually improve our safety performance while delivering reliable removal services.
